9 Million Mobile Handsets Recycled in 2009

According to a report recently published by Ovum, Telecoms and IT industry analyst over 9 million old mobile phones were recycled in 2009 which was double that the amount sent in, in 2007.

The amount of phones that have been sent in for recycling is said to have doubled due to financial reasons rather than environmental. In recent years the UK has become the most developed and competitive mobile phone recycling country in the world. The analyst estimated that 26.5% of the mobile handsets recycled in Europe last year were in the United Kingdom alone.

Co Author of the report, Jimmy Green said “In recent years the UK has seen an influx of online players that offer cash for old mobile phones. This increase in competition has resulted in a more cut-throat market that has moved away from the original intention of responsible recycling and reducing landfill.”
