Mini SIM

Orange has launched new mini SIM cards in order to halve waste generated every time the company issues their customers with new or upgraded SIM cards.

The network operator claims to be the first in Europe to introduce Mini SIMS. It’s not the actual SIM cards that will become smaller but the credit card shaped plastic that was originally held round them. This plastic will be removed saving 90% waste on each one.

In 2008 2.8 billion SIM cards were shipped worldwide weighing just over 11,500 tonnes; this means that the new SIM cards could cut waste by up to 6000 tonnes every year if adopted by the whole mobile phone industry.

The new mini SIMs are currently being trialled with some of Orange’s pay monthly customers, they hope to extend the scheme to all new SIMs in the near future.
