According to recent research carried out by a UK price comparison website 9 out of 10 people in Britain do not care whether their mobile handsets are eco friendly.

The research showed that 88% of adults living in the UK don’t care about how eco friendly their mobile is, the most important factors when choosing a mobile were cost at 59%, battery life at 44% and durability at 33%.

The study also showed that almost half of Britons said they wouldn’t pay extra for a mobile phone made of recycled materials and a further 1 in 8 would not buy a recycled mobile at all. 39% of adults in the study believed that mobile phones had no hazardous materials in them that is a massive 4 out of 10 people. This year alone over 1.5 million handsets are expected to be thrown in the bin; this lack of awareness could cause serious problems to the environment.

However the study does show that 12% of Brits do take an interest in how eco friendly their mobile is and 19% said they would pay an average of £32 more for a ‘green’ phone than a standard mobile handset.

Green mobile phones and chargers are being developed at a faster pace but it seems from this recent research that only a small number of people are aware of this. However those who are aware do obviously see the benefits they can have to the environment and are willing to pay a little bit more.

Several mobile recycling companies do now exist and people need to be aware that they can recycle their existing mobile phones, earn a few pounds and help to save the environment. Mobile phones contain many harmful parts and if not disposed of correctly can cause lots of damage to the environment.
