Top 3 Green Mobile Handsets

Published by Stephen Roper on Tagged Eco Friendly

Most mobile phones are made up of many dangerous materials including PVC, zinc, lead, flame retardants and arsenic. When old phones are thrown in the bin they will often end up at one of Britain’s landfill sites where the toxic materials will leak into the soil and water supplies. Recycling your phones is a great way to help the environment and get rid of old handsets. For new phones the mobile industry has recently started to look at ways to make their handsets a lot ‘greener’ to begin with.

In 2006 Nokia introduced a whole range of new handsets that are free of PVC and in 2008 they launched a phone that had no flame retardants. Other mobile companies have since followed with their own eco friendly phones. The following are the best three ‘green’ mobiles currently on the market or to be released soon:

Sony Ericsson C901 GreenHeartSony Ericsson Greenheart C901 – The casing on this model is made of 50% recycled plastic, there is an electronic manual instead of paper and a lower energy display. The C901 has been painted with water based paint and even comes with a 100% recycled plastic headset.

The C901 Greenheart will be released in the UK at the end of 2009.

Samsung Blue EarthSamsung Blue Earth – Comes with an integrated solar panel that will give you 10 minutes of talk time with 1 hour of sun light, the casing is made from renewable materials and recycled plastic and the mobile is free of all brominated components and phthalates.

The Blue Earth also has pre-installed applications such as ‘Eco Walk’ which tracks how many CO2 emissions you can save by talking public transport or walking instead of driving. It also has a 1 touch energy saving mode and comes with an energy efficient charger.

The Samsung Blue Earth is expected to be available in the UK by early 2010.

Motorola RenewMotorola Renew W233 – This mobile’s casing is made from recycled plastic bottles, it requires 20% less energy than other phones, the packaging is made from recycled paper and is much smaller than other handsets.
